After First Road Victory, Aztecs Ready for City Championship

San Diego State’s Men’s Basketball team is off to a 5-2 start after earning a hard-fought road win over Illinois State. It took a team effort with senior leadership from Jeremy Hemsley and Devin Watson. The Aztecs seized the lead quickly in the first minute and never let it go. There was a palpable confidence in the Aztec’s game and it showed. Early in the second half when Illinois St. cut the lead to three, NBA -hopeful Jalen McDaniels shut up the home crowd with an emphatic dunk that extended SDSU’s lead back to five. The Aztecs never looked back and secured the road win with a 75-65 score line.

Up next the Aztecs are set to square off against their cross-town rival USD in the San Diego City Championship. The USD Toreros have clawed-out one of their best non-conference records in recent years and their senior-laden team is hungry. USD has already beaten the Pac 12’s Colorado and is eager to take on anyone with a higher rating than themselves. With both team’s coming off victories in their last game, this matchup will pit two teams who are riding a wave of confidence, against one another.
USD and SDSU are playing at a high level. The cross-town clash is going to be a bitter, grueling, and epic battle to decide who has the best basketball team in San Diego. Tip-off is set for Wednesday Dec 5th at 7pm in Viejas Arena. Every seat in Viejas will be filled and for one night, the San Diego sports community will live and die on the hardwood.
